Gray’s Anatomy e-dition: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice
Publisher: Churchill Livingstone Number Of Pages: 1600 Publication Date: 2004-12ISBN / ASIN: 0443066760 EAN: 9780443066764 Binding: Hardcover Manufacturer: Churchill Livingstone Studio: Churchill Livingstone
Not since it first published in 1858 has Gray’s Anatomy introduced so much innovation to the world of anatomical references. A team of renowned clinicians, anatomists, and basic scientists have radically transformed this classic resource to incorporate all of the newest anatomical knowledge reorganized it by body region to parallel clinical practice and added many new surface anatomy, radiologic anatomy, and microanatomy images to complement the exquisite artwork that the book is known for.
In addition, a new, multimedia package enables users to consult the printed book. Access a dynamic, continuously updated web site or explore a CD-ROM containing all of the book’s images plus 9 fully rotatable, strippable anatomical models. Although there are now many books called “Gray’s Anatomy,” only this 39th Edition carries on the true lineage of the original text. And, only this 39th Edition delivers so much pragmatic, clinically indispensable information. The result is, once again, the world’s definitive source on human anatomy.
Pocket Atlas of Human Anatomy By Heinz Feneis
Publisher: Georg Thieme Verlag Number Of Pages: 500Publication Date: 2000-01 ISBN / ASIN: 3135112047EAN: 9783135112046 Binding: Hardcover Manufacturer: Georg Thieme Verlag Studio: Georg Thieme Verlag
Review:A valuable key to the standard international nomenclature. The Pocket Atlas is a useful and economical illustrated reference to the standard international nomenclature of human anatomy (Nomina Anatomica, NA). Most of the book follows a uniform format with typically four or five number-coded black-and-white line drawings on each right-hand page, and on the facing page, a key to the illustrations with the English name, Latin (NA) name, and a concise definition of each term. A typical entry is 23 Greater palatine foramen. Foramen palatinum majus. Opening into the greater palatine canal located near the posterior margin of the bony palate between the palatine bone and maxilla. B E (B and E are figure references.)
Some entries include, and indicate by different bracket styles, alternative but equally accepted synonyms, unofficial expressions for a structure found in the Nomina Anatomica, unofficial synonyms not found in the NA, and expressions newly modified or added by the International Committee. There is a key to the bracketing and font changes inside the front cover for easy reference. End-matter includes a bibliography of 94 literature citations and a thorough 66-page index. I wouldn’t regard the Pocket Atlas as highly important for routine undergraduate teaching or a layperson’s reference.
The illustrations are clear but unremarkable, and there are much better atlases of human anatomy available. But for anyone writing in the area of human anatomy, for students of the health professions who want a concise review, and for anyone who may be occasionally confused by the variations in terminology from one anatomical atlas to another, this should be a worthwhile addition to one’s professional library. As a medical textbook writer, I find this much more useful than the Nomina Anatomica itself, which is out of print, hard to find, overly expensive, and offers no illustrations or definitions.
Concise Dictionary of Pharmacological Agents: Properties and Synonyms By I.K. Morton, J.M. Hall, Publisher: Springer Number Of Pages: 342 Publication Date: 1999-11-15 ISBN / ASIN: 0751404993 EAN: 9780751404999 Binding: Hardcover Manufacturer: Springer Studio: Springer
This dictionary provides a convenient personal reference source, intended to complement more encyclopaedic works. First, there is an alphabetic, fully cross-indexed listing of pharmacologically active agents and their properties, containing details of some 4000 individual chemical agents including medical drugs in current use, experimental agents and toxins used as investigation tools. Over 10,000 alternative names are indexed, including chemical names, abbreviated chemical names, official pharmacological names, proprietary names and research code numbers.
A key feature is that the properties of the agents are categorised, according to mechanism and use, into 300 classes -for each of which there are descriptive articles for which key literature and review references are provided.Second, there is an alphabetical glossary explaining the meaning of some 3000 biomedical terms from pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, pathology, physiology, anatomy and microbiology. Emphasis in explanation is given to terms that can cause confusion, for example those relating to drug receptors and to endogenous mediators. This work provides indispensable information for researchers in the fields of pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics, and biochemistry, as well as for medical and science writers and editors and drug regulatory officers.
